Anxiety has a way of weaving itself into each part of a person’s existence.

Whether it takes the form of full-blown panic or chronic worry, anxiety can limit the potential of every aspect in your life.

It might stop you from going to college, prevent you from finding a job, damage your relationships, or
even make you a prisoner in your own home. In short, it can be truly incapacitating. It’s important
for you to know, you are not alone.

Anxiety disorder can also be caused due to emotional, cognitive, and behavioral characteristics.
Emotionally, we experience terror and dread, and we often are irritable or restless. Cognitively, we
are on the lookout for danger.

Behaviourally, we seek to confront the threat or escape from it.
In a realistic fear response, these emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses subside when the threat subsides.



Psychological and physical reasons are responsible for the ways different people react to trauma. For example, flashbacks are the brain’s way of defining how best to be prepared should such an experience happen again.

The adrenaline the body produces following a trauma is the body’s fight or flight response, designed to help you defend against danger. If your trauma was severe, this reaction can remain leaving you constantly on edge.

New research around PTSD has uncovered that there are certain factors seemingly to increasing your capacity to develop the disorder following a traumatic experience, including:

● Already experiencing high levels of life stress at time of trauma
● Previous exposure to traumatic experiences as a child
● Abusive childhood
● History of mental health issues, such as depression

There is also some research to suggest certain individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing PTSD. These discoveries link a lower amount, of certain proteins and peptides in the brain to increased sensitivities to fear, and a theory that those with a small hippocampus volume in the brain may be more likely to develop PTSD when trauma is experienced.

Secondary traumatic stress is the emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the first hand trauma experience, they may witness the event or even take the blame for what has happened.


Sexual trauma is the exposure to any sexual inappropriate behaviours that causes an individual to experience a great deal of stress, therapy can help victims process the violation and start to move forward.


PMDD is a female mood disorder that causes severe
irritability, depression, or anxiety in the week or two leading up to when the period starts.
Symptoms tend to subside or go away a few days after the period has started.


Trauma that isn’t just experienced by one person but extends from one generation to the next. It can be silent, covert, and undefined, surfacing through nuances and inadvertently taught or implied throughout someone’s life from an early age onwards.


Complex PTSD can be diagnosed in adults or children who have repeatedly
experienced traumatic events, such as violence, neglect, or abuse. Complex PTSD is thought to be
more severe if:

The trauma events happened early on in life

The trauma was caused by a parent or carer
The person experienced the trauma for a long time
The person was alone during the trauma
There is still contact with the person responsible for the trauma.

As it may take years for the symptoms of complex PTSD to be recognised, a child’s development,
including their behaviour and self-confidence, can be altered as they get older.
